Mecke's Reagent To Help Detect Ecstasy Use
Known as a simple spot test to help presumptively identify the presence of alkaloids and other compounds in a sample, the Mecke reagent is prepared by adding a gram of selenious acid to 100 ml of the concentrated form of sulfuric acid. This reagent's mixture will then be dripped into the substance that is being tested. This reagent is used primarily for the identification of heroin (commonly found in ecstasy pills) and all other types of opiates.
How Does Mecke's Reagent Works?
The Mecke Reagent can help with drug detection by simply applying a few drops of the reagent into the sample. This reagent, like all other reagents used for drug identification, should be handled with extra care since it can be corrosive. Selenious acid and sulfuric acid are both highly toxic.
