Mayer's Reagent for Alkaloid Testing

The Mayer's reagent is typically used not for drug detection but more for alkaloid detection particularly in natural products. This reagent is prepared using a mixture of around 5 grams of potassium iodide with 1.36 g of mercuric chloride. This mixture will then be dissolved in 100 milliliters of water. Often, this screening method is used as the first test before a subject may proceed to other drug verification methods like Dille-Koppanyi Reagent or Marquis Reagent. Further testing will actually depend upon the results exhibited by the Mayer's Reagent.

The Mayer's reagent can also be used in drug detection for amphetamines, aside from detecting alkaloids and distinguishing one from that of the other. Basically, the colorimetric scheme will produce a cream color to indicate the presence of amphetamines or narcotic alkaloids in the subject.
